Welcome to Small Flock Veterinary Care

Small Flock Veterinary Care is a specialized veterinary practice in Abbotsford, B.C. Canada. We specialize in providing veterinary services for backyard poultry. Our veterinary team has over 40 years of experience in the development of a very successful integrated poultry health management program. Through our continuing work with Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd. (www.canadianpoultry.ca) we here at Small Flock Veterinary Care are at the forefront of new and changing information in poultry health and management. Our goal is to provide professional advice and develop up-to-date personalized wellness plans for your flock with a focus on preventative medicine.  
There are numerous opportunities for continuing education that have been established and developed by Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd. and these opportunities can be explored by small flock owners as well.

Services We Provide

out-of-townWe offer a full range of flock care service for small flock clients and non-poultry veterinarians. Phone and online consultations are available for out of town clients. 

  • General Health Care Consultation 

    We will work with you to design a flock health management program, including a housing/biosecurity design, vaccination, nutrition, and parasite control protocols to optimize your flock health. 
    - Nutrition- Vaccination Program- Integrated Pest Management- Biosecurity Program - Housing Design
    Phone consultation appointments are also available for out-of-town clients.  Group consultation is available at a discounted rate, please contact us for more information 
  • Medical Services 

    Physical examination and diagnostic tests are available. Please call us for more information.
  • Field Call Services

    Field call services are available upon request. 
  • Flock Inspection; Import/Export 

    If you are showing or selling your birds out of country you will need to have a Health Certificate as well as import papers completed. We can help make this a smooth process. Our veterinarians are accredited under the Health of Animals Act and Regulations from CFIA. Please contact us for more information.


  • Technical/Hands-on Training

    We provide a variety of technical training including but not limited to: - Feather trimming - Blood sampling - Euthanasia training - Tube-feeding- Giving injectable medication/vaccination - Salmonella monitoring- Giving oral medication to birds- Fecal sampling

  • Vaccination Program


  • Necropsy; Lab Report Consultation

    Necropsy is an important diagnostic tool if you have had unexplained mortality in your flock and want to make sure there is nothing present that could affect the rest of your birds. 
    If you wish to have a postmortem examination it is best done as soon as possible. Make sure to contain your bird in a sealed and labeled bag, keep chilled and call the clinic for further instructions.
  • Humane Euthanasia and Cremation 

    There is a couple of approved humane euthanasia methods for chickens, pigeons, and turkeys. After care options include home burial, communal cremation, or Private cremation with specialty urn options. 
    We also offer euthanasia course to backyard poultry clients, please contact us to sign-up for the wait-list. 
  • Welfare Consulting and Auditing

    We provide consultation and auditing services for all levels in poultry and pigeons. Our veterinarians are PAACO (Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization) certified.

Dr. Gigi Lin

BSc (Agr), DVM, Diplomate ACPV

Dr. Gigi Lin is enthusiastic about chickens and pigeons no matter what your flock size is! Gigi received her B.Sc. in Agroecology from the University of British Columbia and earned her D.V.M from the University of Saskatchewan. Gigi is also board certificated with the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV). Gigi joined Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd. in 2017 where she provides diagnostic, research, and field services to the poultry industry in Western Canada. Gigi is also passionate about backyard poultry and pigeon medicine. She particularly enjoys diagnostic investigation and client education. Gigi is also a volunteer veterinarian for the Langley Animal Protection Society, where she donates her time to provide veterinary service for shelter animals.

Dr. Stewart J. Ritchie

BSc (Agr), MS, DVM
Diplomate ACPV

Dr. Stewart Ritchie grew up in a family feed mill in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia and was immersed in poultry premix and feed production from an early age. Stew received his B.Sc. in Agriculture from the University of British Columbia and earned his M.S. from the University of Arkansas and D.V.M. from the University of Saskatchewan. Stew is also a Diplomate in the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. Stew is a member of the Poultry Science Association since 1980. Stew served as President of the American Association of Avian Pathologists. Dr. Ritchie served as President of the Western Poultry Disease Conference (WPDC) and was instrumental in adding British Columbia as host to many future WPDC meetings. Dr. Ritchie established the Western Meeting of Poultry Clinicians in 1990 and the B. C. Poultry Symposium in 2012. Dr. Ritchie was appointed to Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia. Stew is President of Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd. Since 1989 and S. J. Ritchie Research Farms Ltd. since 1992.
